Discover what the subsidy for floor insulation entails, and which floor construction will easily meet the subsidy requirements.

Renovating your floor? Don't forget your floor insulation!

When renovating your floor, also consider floor insulation. With an insulated floor, you need to heat less to achieve the same temperature in your home. This way, you can save up to 15% on your energy bill. Additionally, floor insulation provides comfort and has a sound-dampening effect. And of course, insulating your floor is also good for the environment, as you will need to heat less.

In this article, you'll discover which subsidies for floor insulation are available in 2026. We'll also tell you which approach you should choose to qualify for grants (where applicable). This way, you can soon make a smart choice from various types of floor insulation, including EPS floor insulation, PUR floor insulation, and insulation boards.

Which floor insulation and floor structure should you choose?

To receive a subsidy for floor insulation, your project and floor insulation must meet specific conditions. For example, if you want to qualify for the Flemish government's My Renovation Premium (floor category), the Rd value of your floor or basement ceiling must be at least 2 m²K/W. This insulation value indicates how well an insulation material (e.g., floor insulation) of a certain thickness provides thermal insulation. Check below to see which floor constructions will easily meet this requirement and discover the ideal floor construction for your project here.

Good to know: To be eligible for the floor insulation subsidy (My Renovation Premium) from the Flemish government, your floor insulation must be installed by a certified contractor.

Important from March 1, 2026: who still receives a grant for floor insulation?

From March 1, 2026, the rules for My Renovation Premium will change. This will primarily impact owner-occupiers in income categories 1 and 2 and other investors (e.g., private landlords / non-owner-occupiers). In concrete terms, this means that not everyone can apply for flooring and insulation work. You can still apply under the current conditions until February 28, 2026.

  • Owner-occupier (single-family home or apartment): The four income categories will remain. From March 1, 2026, income categories 1 and 2 will only be eligible for applications for heat pumps and heat pump boilers (no longer for floor/underfloor insulation). Nothing will change for income categories 3 and 4.
  • Other investor in a home (e.g. private landlord, non-owner-occupier): falls into income category 1 for applications and from 1 March 2026 will only be eligible for heat pump and heat pump boiler.
  • Landlord to a housing association: retains the highest premium amounts and falls into income category 4 (no change).
  • Investor in an apartment building: the basic premium remains the same for all categories, including floor work (heat pump/heat pump boiler: lower amounts).
  • Investor in non-residential building: will no longer be entitled to My Renovation Premium from 1 March 2026.

Not sure which target group/income category you fall into? Always check the most recent terms and conditions on the official Flanders website and/or your application portal.

Subsidy for floor insulation: discover possible floor structures

EPS floor insulation: floor structure with insulation screed

EPS vloerisolatie

This floor structure with EPS floor insulation consists of 2 layers. Under your screed, an insulation screed is applied, which serves as floor insulation. Insulation screed consists of EPS beads mixed with cement and additives. The lambda value of the EPS beads is low, which means that the material has a high insulating effect. As a result, you enjoy a pleasant floor temperature and thermal comfort in the home.

The insulation screed layer has a high load-bearing capacity, does not require reinforcement for this application, and has a seamless finish with less build-up height, which is convenient for renovations. This floor structure with insulation screed is ideal for, for example, your attic or bathroom, but is also suitable for a ground floor or basement. View this floor structure with EPS floor insulation and discover the possible finishes. Minimum height of this floor structure: + 9.5 cm. Allow at least 8 cm of EPS to achieve insulation values of 2 m²K/W.

EPS floor insulation to replace the concrete slab: screed with insulated concrete slab

EPS vloerisolatie ter vervaning betonplaat

With this floor structure, concrete reinforcement and foil are installed, after which the space is filled with a layer of insulation screed of at least 15 cm thick. The insulation screed, consisting of EPS floor insulation, replaces the traditional concrete slab. Make sure that the insulation screed is applied evenly and level. If you want to easily install your floor structure yourself with the handy Staenis grid, the height difference should not be greater than 2 centimeters. Check the manual for installing this floor structure with an insulated concrete slab. Minimum height of this floor structure: + 20 cm. With at least 15 cm of EPS, you will definitely achieve insulation values of 2 m²K/W.

Combination of EPS floor insulation and PUR: floor structure screed with PUR floor insulation panels

EPS vloerisolatie met PUR isolatieplaten

In this floor structure with a concrete slab for a ground floor or basement, the subfloor consists of PUR floor insulation (PUR boards). The unevenness of the subfloor and the pipes is leveled with insulation screed. On top of the insulation screed layer, the insulation boards and screed are placed. Learn more about the installation of this floor structure with PUR floor insulation. Minimum height of this floor structure: + 12.5 cm. You will probably need 6 cm of EPS to level just above the pipes. Place at least 2 cm of PUR boards above that to achieve the insulation values of 2 m²K/W.

Good to know: Insulating your floor with insulation screed and PUR insulation boards has several advantages over sprayed PUR and screed. The thinner applied insulation screed is better for the environment, while the loose-laid PUR insulation boards can be reused later. In addition, the non-shrinking PUR insulation boards provide a more stable base for screed. Et voilà, a flatter and more sustainable end result with a uniform thickness.

PUR floor insulation: floor structure with screed and sprayed PUR

Sprayed PUR

With this floor structure with a concrete slab for a ground floor or basement, the subfloor consists of sprayed PUR floor insulation. A specialist company applies the PUR floor insulation under the screed. View the specifications of this floor structure with PUR floor insulation for more information. Minimum height of this floor structure: + 7.5 cm. With a minimum of 5 cm of sprayed PUR, you achieve insulation values of 2 m²K/W.

Attention: sprayed PUR floor insulation is harmful to the environment and your health. We advise against using sprayed polyurethane foam (PUR) as floor insulation due to the serious health risks and the negative effects on the environment. Sprayed PUR floor insulation can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and deteriorate indoor air quality. This can cause respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and other health problems. Additionally, the production process is burdensome for the environment. Therefore, look for responsible alternatives to sprayed PUR floor insulation, such as ecological floor insulation (cellulose fibers, hemp or flax fibers) and mineral wool. EPS floor insulation and XPS floor insulation are also more environmentally friendly options.
